On 4 April, children from Primary School No. 7 in Mława visited a state-of-the-art municipal waste processing facility in Kosiny Bartosowe.

Our young visitors learned a number of interesting things about sorting waste and the significance of this procedure. They had the opportunity to see a cogeneration power plant with a bioreactor fed with specially prepared municipal waste (generated in households, schools, offices, etc.) containing organic (biodegradable) waste, such as food scraps (vegetable and fruit peels, banana peels, lunch leftovers, etc.) but also leaves, mowed grass, paper, wooden objects or old clothes made of natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk).

Moreover, the children saw the process of production and drying of alternative fuel. Some of the children were completely unfamiliar with this kind of fuel and were unaware that it may be used in waste incineration plants or industrial facilities such as cement plants equipped with appropriate kilns. The young students also learned that this type of fuel helps save fossil fuels (such as coal, natural gas and crude oil) which would otherwise have to be burned to produce heat or electricity.

The children had the opportunity to see a variety of processing and transportation equipment as well as waste processing lines and machinery.

We hope that the knowledge gained by our young guests will translate into greater environmental awareness among themselves and among their families, which will in turn result in a higher percentage of segregated waste at household level.
